Laminate and Vinyl Guide

Vinyl flooring is made entirely out of plastic, while laminate flooring is made out of a combination of wood and plastic. Both have their pros and cons, in this guide we will breakdown both of these types of flooring.

Vinyl Flooring:

  • Vinyl flooring comes in either tile or sheet form. One of the least expensive forms of flooring, vinyl is very popular among homeowners, because it offers great value at an affordable price.

  • Available in various colors, designs, and styles. It mimics other flooring options in appearance.

  • It also wears incredibly well. It is extremely durable, with many manufacturers backing their products with warranties.

  • Vinyl tiles are easy to cut and install by DIYers, especially when the tiles feature self-adhesive backing. Sheet vinyl, on the other hand, can be very difficult for homeowners to install, and therefore, should be installed by a professional for the best results. A well-installed and properly maintained vinyl floor can last for well over 20 years.

  • Vinyl provides a slightly softer surface than other flooring options such as tile or wood, because most products are backed with a thin layer of either felt or foam. This soft layer results in the floor having a little more flexibility which makes it easier to stand on for long periods of time

  • Vinyl is very resistant to dirt and water, and it’s one of the few flooring types that can be installed directly over the subfloor or over a previous vinyl or linoleum installation, without requiring demolition first. It's also a good option for installing on a floor with a lot of cracks or excessive movement

  • Vinyl requires practically no maintenance after installation, it just needs to be swept and mopped occasionally to keep the floor clean and dirt free

  • The spongy quality of vinyl flooring may prevent a glass from breaking if it’s dropped on the floor, but a sharp object can gouge the surface if dropped. This is also a concern when it comes to moving furniture. Furniture without pads could result in scratching or gouging the tile or popping the tile off the floor entirely

  • Vinyl flooring is less appealing than hardwood and does nothing to a home’s resale value.

  • It can be very difficult to remove once it is installed.

Laminate Flooring:

  • Laminate installs fast and easy. Laminate has a click/lock or fold/lock design that allows planks to fit together like puzzle pieces. Making it ideal for DIYers.

  • Laminate mimics the design and look of other flooring types such as tile, wood, stone and other natural materials. Every board is of consistent quality and appearance.

  • Easy to clean. Just use a vacuum or broom. Mop with a slightly damp mop or better yet, laminate floor cleaner. No floor waxing is ever necessary.

  • Unlike wood, which can dent, laminate flooring is mostly impervious to dents and scratches. Laminate flooring has a "wear layer" that protects the photographic layer underneath.

  • Laminate will not tolerate water therefore its not suitable for kitchens and bathrooms where there is an excessive amount of moisture. For heavy moisture, you need a very impervious surface like vinyl or Porcelain tile.

  • Laminate flooring won't increase the resale value of your house. Engineered hardwood will give you a better value when reselling if you want to get top dollar for your home.
